THE WORK OF QUAYOLA. New Algorithmic Gestures

On Wednesday, May 7, RUFA will host a new Talk, the format designed to welcome creative professionals who share experiences, projects, and visions with the academic community.

Guest of this Talk will be Quayola, one of the most renowned artists in the international media art scene, known for his ability to explore the boundaries of computational art and artificial intelligence. Curated by Caterina Tomeo.

Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at 11:00 AM, Aula Magna (G13)
RUFA campus in Via Giuseppe Libetta, 7. The talk will be held in Italian.

The talk, entitled “IL LAVORO DI QUAYOLA. Nuove gestualità algoritmiche”, will offer the opportunity to retrace his work from 2007 to 2024 through an immersive journey into his practice and experimentation. Quayola uses technology as a lens to explore the tensions and balances between reality and artifice, figuration and abstraction, past and future. His immersive installations – often hosted in historically significant architectural sites – reinvent canonical imagery through customized software and contemporary languages.

Drawing from landscape painting, sculpture, and classical iconography, the artist develops a hybrid aesthetic that takes shape through audiovisual performances, videos, sculptures, and works on paper. His works have been exhibited in major international institutions including the V&A Museum in London, Park Avenue Armory in New York, the National Art Center in Tokyo, UCCA in Beijing, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and festivals such as Ars Electronica, Sonar, and the Sundance Film Festival.
His research also intersects with the musical world, through collaborations with composers, orchestras, and artists such as Jamie XX, Plaid, Tale Of Us, Vanessa Wagner, the London Contemporary Orchestra, and many others. In 2013, he was awarded the prestigious Golden Nica at Ars Electronica. This Talk will be a unique opportunity to engage with one of the leading figures of contemporary art and be inspired by his experimental and visionary approach.

Registration for the talk opens on Tuesday, April 28, 2025.
