“La fotografia piuttosto che un resoconto lineare dovrebbe essere una composita unità di interdipendenze”.

Beyond the Frame: Student Explorations in Photographic Rolls and Books offers a reflection on the infinite possibilities of contemporary photography in academia, embracing the expressive freedom of the medium in the context of current visual research.
The exhibition presents a selection of projects created by RUFA students in the Photography course over the past five years, highlighting their achievements in the process of defining their visual identity, exploring different modes of visual and narrative construction with the intention of presenting a broad and diverse look at the students’ creative experiences.

“Beyond the Frame” celebrates the research and the creative process understood as a journey composed of ascents, descents, accelerations and falls; it stages a dialogue between images, bodies and creates short circuits between different possibilities of approaches, styles and perspectives present in the books, reels and on the walls, with the aim of finding new forms in relation to the space and experience of fruition. The installation comes to life from the characteristics of the exhibition space, highlighting the importance of the relationships between images within a project. The roll display also recalls the continuous and dynamic process of research work, the more archaic forms of the book, and the need for the contemporary photographic medium to find new ways of relating to the exhibition space and the experience of fruition.

The projects on display reflect a rich variety of approaches in exploring the photographic medium: from the analysis of the storage and documentation possibilities by Michael Trutta, to the exploration of artificial intelligence and cyborg issues by Leonardo Valdivia Hurtado, to the personal research and storytelling by Serena Radicioli, incorporating archive and different ways of approaching the shot, to Lucia Estevez’s experimentation with performativity and materials and Lucrezia Ceselin’s analysis of pressing environmental issues.

The exhibition also features several interpretations of the book-object, from the most experimental to the seemingly more usual, united by the attempt to build a strong coherence between the nature of the project and the construction of the object.

Each volume, each composition of images on the roll, takes on its own form in the installation environment, independent and at the same time related to the overall system of the exhibition, which unfolds in the interaction of the various perspectives of approach to the photographic medium and the space of the book.
