Commitment to sustainability is now crucial to our society, and young people are becoming increasingly sensitive to this topic.
This year RUFA decided to actively involve third-year students from the BA program in Design by having them participate in the Social Furniture Design competition organized by Particle. The brief calls for new types of urban, public furniture, and more specifically new kinds of seats, to explore newfound forms of aggregation through different ways of interaction.
The focus on innovative systems of digital production is a further opportunity for a design methodology that is dedicated to environmental sustainability. Due to the exceptionality of the request, which goes beyond the classic industrial design and production approach, it was decided to embed the competition into the Exhibit Design class, to stimulate the students to have a different and unusual vision of the project. Alongside the more traditional techniques, production methods – such as large-format 3D printing – are introduced to allow the adoption of recycled plastics and bio-materials derived from organic waste.
The result is a series of modular, flippable, interactive, playable sitting systems exploring emerging social themes and natural phenomena.
Among all projects submitted, Freshly Brewed Seat by Erasmus students Ana Morais, Ines Fialho and Audrey De Vleeshauwer reached the Top 3 selection of Particle’s Social Furniture contest. The jury recognized value in the project’s unique storytelling, mixing the topic of sustainability with the most iconic Italian beverage, and its flexible configurability. RUFA and Particle have thus worked in partnership to deliver a 1:1 scale prototype of the project to be showcased at Milan Design Week 2022, to prove concrete efforts in transforming the students’ circular design ideas into marketable products. Together with the Freshly Brewed Seat prototype RUFA exhibit wishes to promote the ideas of the whole class, placing their social furnitures within a selection of the most iconic Italian “piazze”, creating a collection of Italian postcards.
