Emanuela Camacci and Environmental Art: “Shelter in the Forest” at GNAB in South Korea
Last August, RUFA artist and professor Emanuela Camacci was one of the main participants at the Geumgang Nature Art Biennale (GNAB), a prestigious environmental art biennial in Gongju, South Korea. Her work, “Shelter in the Forest”, drew attention from critics and visitors alike for its ability to blend sculpture, nature, and environmental reflection.
The shelter created by Camacci resembles the form of a wild bee hive, a nest offering protection and refuge. It is an intimate space where one can feel safe, standing or sitting, while observing the outside through the gaps between the layers of wood. Each wooden layer, arranged in a descending order, creates a visual rhythm that resonates in the air, giving the sculpture a sense of expansion that spreads into the surrounding environment.
The dark brown tones of the layers are interrupted by natural-colored wooden cylinders, creating an organic movement and a twist that breaks the symmetry of the piece. This interplay of shapes and colors brings to life a space immersed in nature, blending seamlessly with the surrounding forest, among the trees.
“Shelter in the Forest” is not just a sculpture: it is an invitation to reflect on the symbiosis between humans and nature, offering a shelter that allows us to view the world from a new perspective, while feeling both protected and part of it.
Emanuela Camacci’s participation in the GNAB once again highlights the excellence and innovation of RUFA-affiliated artists, capable of taking their creative vision beyond national borders.
Emanuela Camacci
Emanuela Camacci, born in Rome, graduated in Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and furthered her expertise in mosaic art at the laboratory of Costantino Buccolieri for three years. Her artistic journey is marked by participation in numerous exhibitions and land art interventions both in Italy and abroad, including the GNAP Italy – Global Nomadic Art Project in 2019. She has been part of prestigious international residencies such as the Sculpture Symposium in Santiago, Chile (2017) and the Yatoo International Artist in Residence in South Korea (2018).
In Italy, she has received significant recognition, winning awards and competitions for public artworks, including the travertine sculpture “Mani” for the Montesacro Fire Station in Rome and the sculpture “Bolle d’aria” in the permanent collection of the Cantina Produttori Cormòns in Gorizia.
Her artistic path has been enriched by collaborations with artists and professionals from various disciplines, experiences that have expanded her creative and intellectual vision. Camacci explores the deep connection between sculpture, architecture, and the environment, using diverse materials to shape an evocative artistic language rooted in emotions and the exploration of interactions between the artwork and its surrounding context.
