Director and photographer, Giovanni Troilo moves between the worlds of film, television, publishing and advertising.
His work has been published in Newsweek, Der Spiegel, D di Repubblica, GQ, CNN, Wired, Ventiquattro, Wallpaper, Vanity Fair, Io Donna, Flair, Urban.
In 2011 he directed Fan Pio, his first feature film, and published his first book in Germany, ‘Apulien’, which was awarded best photography book at the International Photography Awards in 2012.
Troilo has directed numerous documentaries, commercials and video clips. Between 2012 and 2015 Troilo directed for Sky Arte HD Fotografi, three documentary series about the most important Italian photographers, the documentary series On The Road – Joe Bastianich Music Tour and Caravaggio Criminale. In 2015, with the project La Ville Noire – The Dark Heart of Europe, he was awarded People Photographer of the Year at the Sony World Photography Awards. In the same year he directed for Sky Arte Fotofactory Modena.
Since 2016 he has been the artistic director of PhEST, an international photography and art festival in Monopoli (BA). In 2016 he directed the documentary Casanova Undressed for Sky Arte HD; in the same year William Kentridge – Triumphs and Laments, a documentary film about the great South African artist William Kentridge, was selected at the Festa Internazionale del Cinema di Roma and in 2017 at the Jewish New York Film Festival, the München DOKFest and the Biografilm Festival. The film-doc Coeurope, set in Belgium about contemporary Europe, was selected in competition at IDFA 2016 and aired on RAI3 and Arte/ZDF in Germany and France.
In 2017 he directed The Mystery of the Lost Masterpieces, a series of 7 documentaries made for Sky Arts’ international hub (UK, ITA, GER).
Between 2018 and 2019 he worked on Monet’s Water Lilies and Frida, Viva la Vida, two documentary films for cinema produced by Nexo-Digital and B/Arts. Both films were distributed in Italy and are still being released in many countries. In 2022, his documentary Vesuvius – Or: How they learned to live among volcanoes – was be released in cinemas.
Giovanni Troilo was born in Putignano (BA) in 1977 and graduated in Economics with a thesis in Development Geography.
