Friday 12 April 2024 saw the opening at the Museo Nazionale Romano – Palazzo Altemps the exhibition Terme di Diocleziano. Fotografare il Museo Nazionale Romano, curated by Giorgio di Noto and Chiara Giobbe, which presents the results of the photographic documentation work carried out by the students of the RUFA Photography Course in the spaces of the oldest site of the National Roman Museum: the majestic Terme di Diocleziano.
The exhibition is also an opportunity to present the book of the same name, published by the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione (ICCD), which offers a rich and comprehensive return of the work realised by the students, and is part of a multi-year photo commissioning project for which every year a class of RUFA, in collaboration with the ICCD, works on the documentation of a museum or cultural institution.
Photographing the Terme di Diocleziano
The National Roman Museum opened the spaces of the historic site of the Baths of Diocletian to RUFA students, allowing them to investigate the Great Halls, Michelangelo’s Cloister and all the rooms, inside and outside, that are part of the Baths complex.
It was also possible to photograph an extraordinary event: for the first time in many years, the I-V Classrooms were emptied, and the students were able to document, at different times of day and night, these evocative spaces at different times and in different lights, confronting the structure, light, shadows and surfaces of these majestic and exceptionally bare places. In addition to the technical and methodological rigour required for a work of this kind, there was also room for experimentation: from these different approaches, an effective, evocative and at the same time personal and unprecedented representation of the places photographed thus emerged.
Documenting Cultural Heritage
RUFA and ICCD started an art and heritage documentation project that is now in its second edition, following the success of the first initiative: “Prospettive. Fotografare la Galleria Spada”.
The occasion of the exhibition at Palazzo Altemps also allows the protagonists of this project to talk about their past experience and future projects in the framework of the meeting scheduled at 5 p.m. on 12 April in the Theatre of Palazzo Altemps.
