“Mare Nostrum” by Chantal Spapens

Over the Summer, as part of DigiLab Artist-in-Residence project, Chantal Spapens, 2nd year Master of Fine Arts student, created ‘Mare Nostrum’ a performance-based video on the subject of Social Inclusion, curated by Anja Foerschner of ECC Performance Art.

DigiLabAir is a CreativeEurope-funded artist residency that promotes inclusion, participation, and reflection through performance art co-creation processes in a digital and live hybrid model.
The partnership involved six European cultural associations offering digital residences to 15 artists working on topics of the Sustainable Development Goals Agenda of the United Nations.

“In her ‘Mare Nostrum” Chantal negotiates the eternal promise of Europe as a projection screen of hopes for belonging, for a sense of safety and unity and an improvement of one’s life conditions. As her work shows, however, that promise is fleeting and those following Europe’s siren call and actually reaching its borders, often experience sensations of alienation, disillusionment, and discrimination instead of the better new life they had hoped for”. (Anja Foerschner)

Chantal’s video is available for viewing on performanceartvideo.org, a digital video-on-demand platform; December 15-17, 2023, it will also be showcased in a public exhibition at the Venice International Performance Art Week.
