Compositing Masterclass with VFX Artist Edoardo Carmignani

From May 22 to 26, 2023, RUFA students of Computer Animation and Visual Effects had the opportunity to participate in an exclusive masterclass in Compositing, led by VFX Artist Edoardo Carmignani, currently Compositing Supervisor at Blackstone Studio.

During this intensive week of training, students were able to deepen their understanding of CG passes from both a physical and artistic perspective, exploring various advanced techniques to enhance photorealism and define the final look of renders. Among the topics covered, special attention was given to depth of field (DOF), lens aberrations (distortion, lateral and longitudinal chromatic aberration, field curvature, spherical aberration, coma, astigmatism, optical vignetting), as well as grain management and motion blur.

One of the most innovative aspects of the masterclass was the work on utility passes, which were modified based on the students’ creative needs, allowing them to add details, perform relighting operations directly in the compositing phase, and experiment with advanced tools for controlling the final image.

Edoardo Carmignani shared with the students his experience gained over more than eight years in the field of visual effects. His educational journey began at the Accademia Nazionale del Cinema in Bologna, where he studied editing, camera operation, and cinematography. He later deepened his expertise in compositing, specializing in tool development using software such as Nuke, Python/PySide, and C++. Currently, his work focuses on creating innovative solutions in the VFX industry, continuously staying up-to-date with new technologies.

The masterclass was a unique opportunity for RUFA students to learn directly from an industry expert, applying the knowledge acquired and experimenting with high-level creative solutions. An experience that enriched their educational path and prepared them to face the challenges of the professional world with advanced technical skills and an innovative vision of compositing.
